Avant Garde Gothic is a geometric sans-serif typeface designed by Herb Lubalin and Tom Carnase in 1970. This project began with an in-depth exploration of the typeface’s origins, focusing on its roots in modernist design principles and the Bauhaus movement. The initial phase involved researching not only the letterforms themselves but also the cultural and historical context in which the typeface was conceived.

Several rounds of test prints were produced and critiqued to ensure the final product reflected the same quality as the typeface itself. Once the design was complete, a hand-bound hardcover book was created.
